City goes green - Canada - With new hybrid buses
Orion offers lower emissions, costs - Passengers should expect quieter ride
Toronto,Ontario, Canada -Toronto Star, by KEVIN MCGRAN -Apr. 20, 2006: -- The first of the TTC's new "hybrid" buses arrive this week, marking the beginning of the first "environmentally friendly" bus fleet in Canada... The TTC will show off its new purchase — an Orion VII low-floor bus — today at city hall. It's the first of 150 new hybrid buses, although the routes they'll operate on are not yet known... The hybrid buses cost about 50 per cent more than regular diesel-powered buses. The bill for these 150 comes to $112 million, paid for by the City of Toronto, the Province and Ottawa... But the long-term benefits should save the city money since the buses are powered through a combination of diesel fuel and electricity, making them more fuel efficient, much quieter on city streets and cheaper to maintain...
