Hybrid - USA - New buses with modern engine powers

VELLEQUETTE -Dec 1, 2005: -- From the curb, riders in Monroe probably won't be able to tell the difference when Lake Erie Transit rolls out its newest mode of transportation next year... To the naked eye, the bus will look no different from any other in their fleet. But the engine compartment will be a different story altogether... Hybrid busses use diesel engines in combination with electric motors to capture and use energy that would otherwise be wasted by braking. Using the hybrid engines can result in diesel fuel savings of up to 40 percent per bus, no small sum when the cost of diesel fuel remains at near record levels, even for public agencies that are exempted from paying fuel taxes... Right now, however, the hybrid versions of LET's 30-foot Opus busses cost about $100,000 more to buy than their traditional diesel counterparts' $270,000 pricetag, according to the manufacturer's Web site...
