The yellow buses alone average 9,580 miles per week during the school year, according to Polk County Schools Transportation Director Johnny Gibbs... That total goes much higher, he says, if activity buses are included... Gibbs said salaries make up the largest part of the transportation department’s budget, but gasoline is catching up... That’s why, he says, it’s difficult to just add routes to reduce bus travel times. If a district adds bus routes, it’s likely to get less state funding, he says...
