Melbourne,Victoria,Australia -Age (subscription),by Dan Silkstone -Jun 24 2005: -- Pressure is building on the State Government to improve bus services, with a report saying outer suburban services seriously lacking and a prominent transport academic criticising the Government's SmartBus project... Because of poor or non-existent bus services, only 5 per cent of trips in the area are taken on public transport, compared with a Melbourne-wide figure of 11 per cent, it says... It concludes that without action the Government will struggle to reach its 20 per cent citywide target by 2020... About 50 bus passengers were included in the survey. Their views suggest that public transport is viewed as a last resort. Asked why they travelled by bus, 81 per cent said because they had no alternative. Only 4 per cent said buses were more convenient...
