Halifax,NS,CAN -The Chronicle Herald/Metro, by KELLY SHIERS -June 24, 2009: -- With video rolling on more than 175 buses, the president of the bus drivers union says he thinks the presence of the recording devices will help drive down the number of confrontations occurring between passengers or between passengers and drivers... Dan MacDonald, Amalgamated Transit Union Local 508 president, said, "The biggest thing is that if an incident does occur, we have a very good description of the individual that was involved in the incident"... Metro Transit began installing the cameras in its buses in February, after its original plan to do so over five years was fast-tracked in the wake of serious assaults on drivers... Last October, HRM councillors awarded a $1.28-million tender to do the work... VIDEO BUSES * USA - Many drivers balk at cameras on school buses

They see equipment as intrusions on privacy

Jefferson Parish,LOU,USA -The Times Picayune, by Jenny Hurwitz -March 8, 2008: -- After a seven-month delay, the Jefferson Parish public school system has activated a video surveillance system on a select group of school buses, intended to monitor student behavior and reduce motor vehicle violations... But while officials are touting the video equipment as a preventive measure that helps ensure the safety and welfare of students, not all bus drivers are on board with the initiative... "I don't have cameras on my bus, and the general consensus with bus drivers is that we don't want them," said Frank Morales, president of the Jefferson Parish Bus Operators Association. "We're privately owned buses, and we feel it's an infringement on our privacy."... The school system employs 278 bus drivers, all of whom own their vehicles... The surveillance package includes cameras mounted on the inside, which are designed to catch students fighting but could also be used to monitor bus driver behavior. Cameras placed on the exterior can help capture drivers who illegally pass a bus that has stopped to let children on or off... The system features special software to help snag those motorists, including license-plate detection and live streaming video. Violators are subject to a fine, which would generate revenue to be split by the school system, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office and ONGO Live, the Metairie video surveillance company providing the equipment...
