It emits fewer greenhouse gases because it has a lower carbon content compared to diesel... Propane buses cost roughly $5,000 more than their diesel counterparts, but districts said they recoup the cost from lower propane prices...

-- Twelve new buses in Olympia School District’s fleet of 33 may not look different, but the engines under their hoods will save the district $300,000... The buses are fueled by propane, instead of the typical diesel fuel. Propane fuel is cleaner-burning and less expensive than diesel... Based in Stanford, the Olympia School District spans 377 square miles. Each school bus travels about 20,000 miles per year... Each bus is estimated to save the district $2,500 per year in fuel and maintenance. Over the course of 10 years — the life-expectancy for a bus — the district expects to save $300,000...

Dallas,TXS,USA -WFAA 8/NBC, by CARLA WADE and DEMOND FERNANDEZ -Aug 13, 2014: -- Dallas County Schools rolled out brand new mini buses for the school year, a welcome sight to many parents. In the past, as many as 2,000 DISD students relied on third party transportation to get to and from school -- including unmarked cars, taxis and vans. Last year there were numerous problems and a News 8 investigation even found safety violations... Angry parents said drivers didn't have proper ID, they showed up late, and there was at least one report of a driver involved in multiple wrecks while a student was in the vehicle... Wednesday afternoon Dallas County Schools and DISD launched a fleet of 180 new mini buses... They will be driven by uniformed DCS employees and will offer safe, clean and convenient transportation on routes with fewer students, a press release said...

* Minnesota - Program makes greener school buses via retrofitting

An independent review of school transport chaired by former home secretary David Blunkett makes the conclusion after a year of investigating the potential for yellow school buses... It says the number of children travelling to school by car has doubled in the last 20 years, creating local traffic congestion and unnecessarily heightening car use during the school run... Rolling out yellow buses would "offer children and parents a safe and attractive option for commuting to and from school", the Yellow School Bus Commission's report says... Mr Blunkett said both local and central government could move forward on his recommendations immediately...
