-- School districts in eastern Iowa are turning to a different fuel to power their school buses... The Cedar Rapids School District has purchased seven new propane buses to replace older diesel models... Linn-Mar, Anamosa, and Vinton-Shellsburg are a few other school districts with some propane buses... Propane is considered a greener alternative to diesel. It emits fewer greenhouse gases because it has a lower carbon content compared to diesel... Propane buses cost roughly $5,000 more than their diesel counterparts, but districts said they recoup the cost from lower propane prices...

** Illinois - Propane fuels Olympia bus switch

-- Twelve new buses in Olympia School District’s fleet of 33 may not look different, but the engines under their hoods will save the district $300,000... The buses are fueled by propane, instead of the typical diesel fuel. Propane fuel is cleaner-burning and less expensive than diesel... Based in Stanford, the Olympia School District spans 377 square miles. Each school bus travels about 20,000 miles per year... Each bus is estimated to save the district $2,500 per year in fuel and maintenance. Over the course of 10 years — the life-expectancy for a bus — the district expects to save $300,000...
