BUSES CARRYING BULKY ITEMS * Australia

* Canberra - Bus passengers allowed to carry bulky goods on ACTION under new rules

-- From Monday, new rules spell out the rights of bus passengers to carry bulky items on to buses, but also set in stone the right of the driver to make the final decision... ACT Transport Minister Meegan Fitzharris said the new policies would allow passengers to take fold-up bikes and other bulky items on board. They would also mean more certainty for passengers and make buses a more convenient and attractive option... Asked for examples of bulky items, her spokeswoman cited furniture, luggage and musical instruments. But the policies don't list allowed items, and make it clear that it is up to the driver to decide... The new rules spell out that drivers must not help passengers loading or unloading goods... Dangerous goods are banned, including knives, vehicle batteries, gas bottles, fuel and goods that are likely to spill...

TRANSPORT PUBLIC SERVICE * Australia:

* NSW - Buses taking up the public transport slack

(Photo: Nationals Ballina MP Don Page says more bus services are being offered in the northern rivers than in 2013)
Byron,NSW,Australia -Echo Net/Byron Echo, by Hans Lovejoy & Chris Dobney -January 21, 2015: -- Additional bus services are now in place on the north coast, according to retiring NSW MP Don Page (Nationals)... The announcement came after The Echo asked Mr Page what his government was doing about the lack of public transport in the region... Quoting the Northern Rivers Regional Transport Plan 2013, Mr Page said the ‘better way of meeting the public transport needs of the region is increased bus services’ ... "Since that report, I can advise in the Byron area, for example, that 24 additional bus services have been put on. Through improved connections passengers also have access to 125 more trips than in 2013, between Byron Bay, Ballina, Brunswick Heads and Mullumbimby. I acknowledge there is a need for more public transport, but the study released in 2013 found buses were a better and more cost-effective option" ... But Echonetdaily can reveal that, owing to a bizarre anti-compete clause included in commercial bus contracts, the government’s own CountryLink buses are not allowed to pick up passengers travelling less than 40 kilometres...

PUBLIC TRANSPORT WORLDWIDE * Australia - Commuters defend against the attack of the space invaders

"Take one socially and physically sterile environment, pack in more people than there are available seats, ensure most of the people are strangers, and you have public transport..."

Melbourne,VIC,Australia -The Age, by DEBORAH GOUGH -July 25, 2010: -- Being squashed up against strangers on public transport is one of the most uncomfortable everyday activities we have to endure, beaten only by sitting in a dentist's waiting room and standing in a crowded lift... A study has found that the invasion of personal space on public transport is annoying to passengers, along with more commonly known complaints such as costly tickets and unreliable services... The study from the Victoria University of Wellington by Jared Thomas,, now a transport consultant with infrastructure services company Opus, observed 1703 passengers and surveyed passengers (536) and car users (305) on their feelings about public transport... It found that about a quarter of passengers defended their space by sitting on an aisle, placing a bag or coat on the next seat or spreading out to take up more space, and another quarter withdrew into an activity such as reading or listening to music. Their measures worked, with 78 per cent of other commuters choosing not to sit next to ''defensive'' passengers. The study also found regular commuters thought defensive behaviour was rude... But Mr Thomas said the overall level of discomfort could be minimised if more socialising occurred on trains, trams and buses... * Australia - AJFA not surprised

Brisbane,Australia -leonbertrand.blogspot.com, by Leon Bertrand -2 Dec 2007: -- A Courier Mail and QUT study has found that over one third of peak hour busses are running late in Brisbane... This hardly comes as a surprise to us, given that we have been reporting on Translink lateness and incompetance for a while now... The study also found that 100 buses a week are too full to stop for extra passengers. This is in spite of the fact that there was major overcrowding on the bus networks over two years ago... I know that Brisbane is a rapidly growing city, but this is outrageous. Surely the council must also be collecting higher rates with all this extra population to help it cope with demand...
