BUSES DRIVERS' COMPLAINS * USA - Chicago Union: CTA Not Taking Care of Buses

Union workers at the CTA are calling for changes after a weekend crash that left dozens of passengers injured

Chicago,ILL,USA -FOX Chicago News, by Craig Wall -12 Oct 2010:    ... While the CTA continues to search for what caused the bus to veer off Lakeshore Drive on Saturday night, hitting several trees, the bus drivers' union criticized the CTA for what union leaders call an inadequate preventive maintenance program... The union suggested on Monday that what went wrong Saturday night was a problem with the bus, not the driver, and they want the investigation process overhauled... The union pointed to a backlog of more than 800 maintenance issues, and the fact that non-union mechanics are handling repairs since union employees were laid off... The CTA defended it's maintenance practices and accused the union of distorting the facts...   The CTA said the contract mechanics doing the preventive maintenance are factory trained and authorized. A CTA spokesperson also said the backlog of preventative maintenance issues represents non-mechanical work including air filter replacement...
