* USA - An Old Name and a Lightweight Bus

USA - Mechanical Engineering, by Harry Hutchinson, (Vol. 130, No. 11, P. 72) -11 Ago 2008: -- Fisher Coachworks of Troy, Mich., has licensed technology for a lightweight diesel-electric hybrid bus that has twice the mileage and 50 percent of the weight of current hybrid buses... The bus's chassis is constructed from Nitronic 30, a lightweight stainless steel, while the vehicle's diesel engine is used to produce electricity and not drive the wheels directly... The bus was developed by Autokinetics with the assistance of the Department of Energy's (DOE) FreedomCAR and Vehicle Technologies Program... The steel's strength-to-weight ratio allows less material to be used in construction. Fisher Coachworks executive John van Alstyne says the company has used DOE's Advisor simulation tool to determine that the bus will get 10 to 12 miles to a gallon of diesel, and Alan Schaeffer of the Diesel Technology Forum says a current diesel-electric hybrid gets about 5.5 miles to the gallon...


* China - Bus-makers to explore three markets for growth

Shanghai,China -Yahoo/Gasgoo, by George Gao -December 22, 2008: -- The global financial crisis has dealt a heavy blow to China's bus sales. In October, there were 21,900 buses sold in the Chinese market, down 17.49% month on month, down 13.18% year on year, said Auto Industry News today. Many bus makers are expected to seek their sales growth in the public transportation, rural bus service and bus exports. .. Guangdong Midea Group, has suspended its bus production, and Midea Bus is discussing about partnership issues with bus-maker Zhengzhou Yutong Group. Midea Bus has disclosed that it will not accept new orders until the top management gives the approval... Amid the financial crisis and market slump, bus-makers in China are seeking ways to boost their sales in three market sectors: the public transportation, the rural bus service and bus exports to some countries and regions...
