Women-only Buses * Mexico - City's ones offer relief

Transit vehicles restricted to female passengers are a welcome option for those tired of the unwanted attentions of male riders

Mexico City,DF,USA -Los Angeles Times, by Ken Ellingwood -March 12, 2008: -- Maria del Carmen Hernandez endures a nearly two-hour bus ride to her job cleaning a law office on the far side of town. Once her labors are done, she has the same slog home... It's a withering drill, through smog and traffic and the mind-numbing repetition of countless stops and starts. But on this day, at least, Hernandez can rest assured that the rigors of her trip won't include being groped... The 48-year-old Mexico City commuter is among thousands of women who have begun crisscrossing the capital aboard public buses that exclude men... The women-only bus service, launched in January, is the city's answer to a long-standing complaint among Mexican women that in the sardine-can confines of buses and subways, some men simply will not keep their hands to themselves... (Photo by Sarah Meghan Lee /The LA Times - 'JUSTICE': Alba Cruz, from the state of Oaxaca, rides a women-only bus on a visit to Mexico City, with a regular bus visible from the windows. * USA - Seats taken, sir

Harrisonburg,VA,USA -Press Pass, by Ashley Hopkins -March 11, 2008: -- I found particularly interesting. It seems that a public transit operation in Mexico City has created a line of transportation that services only women. After complaints that they were being verbally, emotionally and sometimes physically abused by other male riders, women were given their own bus line... According to the article,"The all-women buses tend to be less crowded, passengers said, and the attitude is more polite." (see above) ... Personally, I think it's a great idea. I know people will argue that it seems a little sexist, almost as though women will soon have their own drinking fountains and hang-outs, but I really don't think this is that extreme. If the women did not feel comfortable with their surroundings, it's good the government did something to remedy their concerns. Too bad Harrisonburg's public transport system is so lacking that most citizens can't use it to get around the city...

* Spring break in Mexico, women-only buses

Los Angeles,CAL,USA -The Los Angeles Times Travel Deal Blogger, by Jen Leo -12 March 2008: -- Ladies, have you ever been groped on a public bus? Even a lingering leer can be uncomfortable to some of us. Mexico City listened to the complaints of their women. Now they run women-only buses. Fifty-five of Mexico City’s 1,300 buses are restricted with 24 more coming soon. But they’re not the only cities catering to women’s needs. Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro and Cairo also have women’s-only transit... (Photo: Eduardo Verdugo / Associated Press)

I think women-only transit is a
great idea come to fruition! As a
female USA citizen formerly re-
siding in Japan/Costa Rica/Slovakia
/Italy, I can't say how many times
I have received unwarranted, dis-
custing remarks & attempted groping
from idiot males on buses/trains/
trams. I call them males as only decent, respectful ones fully deserve rank of being called men.
What sad/twisted male minds allow
their pitiful lives to be domi-
nated by "crotch urges" & harboring
nothing but useless space collect-
ing dust between their ears.
