POLLUTION * Australia - Victoria: the garden state or greenhouse capital?
Melbourne produces far more greenhouse emissions from transport than London despite having half the population, according to a new study
Melbourne,Australia -The Age, by Clay Lucas and Royce Millar -March 11, 2008: -- ... Highlighting the heavy environmental cost of Melbourne's urban sprawl, the study found the city's cars, trucks, motorcyles and public transport services were generating the equivalent of 11 million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year, compared with just 8.5 million tonnes in London... This equated to 3.1 tonnes of carbon per person in Melbourne, compared with 1.2 tonnes per person in Greater London... The analysis, based on published data from authorities in Australia and Britain, was prepared by Victoria's bus industry in support of its push for more investment in public transport... Among the reasons given for the dramatic difference in per capita emissions were Melbourne's larger geographic area, which meant journeys tended to be longer, and the heavier reliance by its citizens on cars... (Video from YouTube, by nic03 -June 19, 2006: "A Melbourne City Bus Adventure" - I got lost...so I took video. You will see a typical Melbourne town, roundabouts!, Aussie cars, and typical Melbourne homes. They all have fenced in front yards and some people park their cars on their front lawns. I know, it's interesting)
