PUBLIC TRANSPORT SYSTEM * India - Ride with me

Public transportation in india is unlike anything i’ve experienced before

India -good.morning.sarajevo, by mackenzie pre-seattle -16 Mar 2008: -- ... Actually, this statement is true in regards to all transportation in india. Their equivalent to our american minivan, the motorcycle... Watch out soccer moms, these indians can fit three times as many growing bodies on them as you can in your towne and country, or grand caravan, or whatever van you’ve chosen to mask with your children’s latest sports number and position... Bodies of all sizes drape across the two-wheeled lounger in such natural fashion. with their casual posture and obvious comfort on board, I often forgot that I was actually staring at people in transit... They looked as if they were curled up ready to watch their favorite (terrible) indian variety show... Babies on board looked as if they came with the bike. An accessory to the handlebars, of sorts. There for additional stimulation or enjoyment on the open road. Kids laugh and giggled with others passing by, while clutching skin folds, saris, or groceries. Anything to hold on and brave whining whistles and suicidal buses.

* Suicidal buses

Oh my goodness, the buses. They do not stop at formal stops, but halt to waving hands and scattered bodies waiting by the road. Don’t so much follow schedules. You simply leave when the bus is filled. While on the route with the passengers above, Shoba and I waited an hour and forty-five minutes. I don’t think anyone noticed but me. Others ran additional errands while we waited, smoked packs of unfiltered cigarettes, or chewed the addictive leaves of the betel tree, which help the poor stave off hunger. I spent this time taking a few photos, which the other passengers embraced excitedly. They really are such a kind, all-embracing people... Lilting voices screamed across the speakers. the level at which the music blared kept me from even thinking of having conversations, much less actually having conversations... Overstimulation is a way of life in india. Loud colors. Defeaning music from songs, radios and car horns. Bodies packed like sardines within all edges of the country... Teeming with life. with culture. with passion. If you ever go to india, ride a bus. or many. I promise it will be unforgettable...
