COMPLAINS * Ireland - Huge number of unsafe buses and trucks are on our roads

An alarming number of unroadworthy buses and trucks have been allowed on to our roads without proper inspection

Dublin,Ireland -The Irish Independent, by Treacy Hogan -February 09 2008: -- ... a damning new government probe reveals... The investigation into the nationwide testing of buses and trucks and buses has uncovered a shameful litany of abuses... The probe by government-appointed consultants found:

* Undue pressure is being placed to provide pass certificates for vehicles that should have failed -- particularly in respect of a number of bus companies.

* Some unscrupulous test centres are even prepared to issue pass certificates for vehicles which have not been inspected.

* Gardai are not doing enough to stop the scandal.

* Local authorities are being stripped of their powers to supervise the 158 private garages doing the testing as a result of the investigation.

The review of the annual roadworthy test for buses and trucks was carried out by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in the wake of public concern over a series of high-profile crashes involving buses and HGV trucks...
It discovered that there was "considerable scope for unscrupulous" operators of the private garages not to meet proper standards...(Video from YouTube, by oma40 -June 22, 2007: "Ireland - Dublin Bus Ride" This Video this is the ride from the top level)

Figures released by the Department of Transport last week reveal the number of journeys to work and school made by bus or coach in the greater Dublin area between 1996 and 2006 increased by just two per cent... Dublin Bus has invested millions of euros in a new fleet, and in quality bus corridors, launched new routes and extended many others as well as making its buses more accessible and attractive... However, the latest figures available from the Central Statistics Office, show that in Dublin during 2006 almost half the population drove to work while just 14 per cent of commuters took the bus...
