"GREEN" NEWS * USA - Plug-in hybrids may cut pollution now
Washington,DC,USA -Earth Times /UPI -May 11, 2007: -- The U.S. electric grid can support 4 million vehicles a day with no changes to it, the chief executive officer of Hauppauge, N.Y.-based Odyne Corp. says... In an interview, Roger Slotkin said plug-in hybrid technology could be powered by the grid at night when much of the system is unused... He said the use of the electric grid to fuel vehicles promotes the use of domestic energy such as coal, gas, nuclear and hydropower... Last month the U.S. Department of Energy said it will provide up to $14 million in funding for battery development for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. Critics say that since this technology -- the grid -- is already here, the department should be spending more... "Don't tell me what we are going to do in 40 years," Slotkin said. "We might not have 40 years. Electric infrastructure is here and it's being wasted."...
