Transport Secretary: but can’t do 24-hr checks
Chandigarh ,Punjab,Ondia -The Chandigarh Newsline -Oct 26, 2006: -- The Punjab government is in the know of the fact that private bus operators ply buses illegally in the state, thus evading the special road tax... This was stated by Secretary Transport, Punjab, R S Sandhu who was taking part in a seminar, ‘Road Passenger Transport — The Way Ahead’, organised by the Pepsu Road Transport Corporation here today. He said, “If we do 24-hour checking we can catch about 300 private buses plying illegally as they do not have a carriage permit but a contract permit which is for tourist buses. They have to pay tax to the government to ply them as carriage buses which they do not. From 300 buses the government gets Rs 12 lakh as tax”...
