'Unfair' - Australia - NTC's fatigue fines, demerit proposals

Australia -Australasian Transport News (subscription) -5 July 2006: -- The National Transport Commission (NTC) is again displaying how out-of-touch it is with industry, the union says, with proposals to hike fines and introduce demerit point penalties for fatigue breaches... A driver running just a couple of minutes late for a rest stop could face fines and the loss of demerit points under the proposals, the NTC admits... It says its draft policy can deliver a more flexible regulatory framework, but Transport Workers Union (TWU) Branch Secretary Bill Noonan says it's unfair and unsustainable... the Australian Trucking Association (ATA) was consulted over the draft policy, but not about the proposed increases. The ATA is preparing a response...
