Fares - New Zealand - Buses running on empty
Hawke's Bay,New Zealand -Hawke's Bay Today, by JONATHAN DOW -27 Oct 2005: -- Bus fares are likely to rise in Hawke's Bay because of poor patronage and the rising cost of diesel... Public transport operator Nimon and Sons Ltd has applied to increase bus fares, a request the Hawke's Bay Regional Council was to consider today... The council subsidises public transport in the region under a concession fare agreement... "That's fine if the buses are full, or if we get a large number of passengers," said Nimon general manager Pete Patterson... "But outside of rush hours, we have buses running around empty - but we still have to pay for gas and the driver." Auckland bus fares will rise 10 percent on Saturday...
