Solar-powered "TU colibri" Bus Stop * Peru - To improve public transport

Lima,Peru -Colourlessdesign, by Beatriz Cockburn -Aug 11, 2010: -- Designed to improve local public transport in Peru, the “TU colibri” by designer Beatriz Cockburn is a small yet significant bus stop concept to keep the passengers updated about the route and time of the buses. Commissioned by Peruvian national transport company TU colibri, the modular bus stop features an intuitive color identification system to recognize buses without any complication. For the color codes, in the form of changeable translucent color rings, not only facilitates easy detection of buses to the illiterate but foreigners as well... Displaying route and time statistics on the touch sensitive information block sustained by a slide-support, the bus stop uses LED lights to indicate the changed route information. Last but not least, the TU colibri also integrates solar panels on its roof to run the bus stop on renewable energy, allowing the Peruvian residents to lead a sustainable lifestyle...

The system will let you tell when the next bus is due, figure out where you are, and even grab news headlines from the aether... It is “covered” in touch-sensitive e-ink screens and can sense where you are, where it is, and what the surroundings are like... MIT architects and engineers just unveiled a design for such a bus stop this past Saturday, at the Genio Fiorentino festival in Florence, Italy... Called EyeStop and developed by the MIT SENSEable City Lab, it takes the tedium out of waiting for the bus and showcases the potential of next-generation urban transportation design...

But Ms. Lewis, a 50-year-old nurse from Rockland County, knows this much: “If you miss it, you’re in trouble,” she said at a bus stop in the East Village on a recent morning... Ms. Lewis had just hustled across 14th Street at First Avenue only to watch the M15 bus lumber away. She stared bleakly down the avenue. Cars rushed past, but the hulk of a bus was nowhere to be seen... “I’m not about to stay here forever,” she said, resolving to walk several blocks to an appointment. If she knew her bus would arrive in the next two minutes, would she wait? ... “Yes,” Ms. Lewis said emphatically. But there was no way to know... She swung around and strode down the block, two minutes before a bus arrived... * Hungary - Budapest transport operator tests "talking" bus stops

Two months later than originally planned, Budapest public transport operator BKV has started testing electronic information boards at some bus stops on route 86

Budapest Hungary -All Hungary News/Caboodle.hu -31 July 2007: -- ... The bus stops can also talk if activated by remote control by visually impaired passengers... The devices have been introduced on four stops on route 86, at Batthány tér, in both directions at Margit híd (Margaret Bridge) and at Kiscelli utca. Electronic information boards will indicate how long passengers have to wait for the next bus. In addition, passengers can view a map on which the current position of the bus is indicated by a light...
