London,EN,UK -The Guardian, by Gwyn Topham -13 August 2014: -- The driving force for TfL is the same as it was for the Victorians – how can more people be moved more efficiently through the capital’s jumbled streets? ... When 19th-century engineers decided their new-fangled locomotives could be driven underground beneath London's crowded streets, they began a tradition for technological innovation that the capital's transport system has never lost... Today the cutting edge has moved from steam to cyber, but the driving force is the same as it was for the Victorians – how can more people be moved more quickly and efficiently through the capital's jumbled, crowded streets? ... At the heart of this is no nimble tech startup, but the capital's transport authority, Transport for London, which vaunts its record as an innovator in the field with some justice, according to the experts propose, amidst others: :
* Contactless payments
* Access to bus seating
* Automatic operation
* Open data
* Managing the traffic
* Managing the pedestriansLabels: future's transports

How does Elon Musk's Hyperloop work?
(Photo from Shutterstock - What is Elon Musk's Hyperloop?)
Los Angeles,CAL,USA -Gizmag, by Brian Dodson -June 6, 2013: -- Over the past year, Elon Musk, billionaire founder of PayPal, Tesla, and SpaceX, has been floating the notion of a "Hyperloop" as a future replacement for bullet trains; one that would get commuters from San Francisco to Los Angeles in as little as 30 minutes... It's clear that he is proposing a system for subsonic transport. Travelling between downtown LA and downtown SF in 30 minutes gives a speed of about Mach 0.91. The same conclusion comes from working out the average speed of an aircraft. Gate-to-gate, the trip between LAX and SFO (337 miles) is listed by the airlines as one hour and 19 minutes, for an average speed of about 255 mph (410 km/h), or about Mach 0.33. Twice this is Mach 0.66... Obviously there are numerous technical, practical, and political problems in setting up such a system, but it would work, and might not be terribly expensive, at least compared to the California bullet train project...Labels: future's transports
Personal Rapid Transit * UK - Debuts At Heathrow
London,EN,UK -All Transport, by Armin Rosen -May 5, 2011: -- Exciting news for utopian futurist transit wonks, as well as air travelers in London, Heathrow Airport’s personal rapid transit system, which will carry travelers from parking areas to the airport’s terminals, started passenger trials this week. Among transportation systems that are actually being developed and built somewhere in the world, PRT could be the most aesthetically and conceptually radical. A PRT system consists of driverless pods that seat 4-6 passengers and travel on a short, dedicated track. The track incorporates interchanges and cutoffs that allow a pod to bypass stations en route to its riders’ final destination—a PRT pod works a bit like a personalized subway train that only makes express stops...Labels: future's transports
