* England - F1 tech is about to make buses way more efficient
(Photo from The Go-Ahead Group: Buses operated by The Go-Ahead Group are being fitted with a fuel-saving system developed for F1 cars)
London,EN,UK -Wired, by Alex Davies -31 July 2014 -- The same technology that helped race car win the grueling 24 Hours of Le Mans will make buses throughout England a lot more fuel efficient... The GKN Hybrid Power Gyrodrive is an electric flywheel that captures energy as the car brakes, then uses it to drive an electric motor that boosts power and cuts fuel consumption. It was developed by Williams Hybrid Power, a division of the company that owns the Williams Formula 1 team... Gyrodrive, known officially by the thoroughly boring name Mk4 eFES, is a kinetic energy recovery system. Such systems capture energy usually lost as heat during braking and use it to power an electric motor... In many cases, that energy is stored in a battery. GKN’s approach is a bit different. When the driver hits the brakes, a traction motor on the axle generates electricity while slowing the vehicle, augmenting the brakes... When the driver gets on the gas, the system taps that spinning flywheel to send as much as 120 kilowatts back to the traction motor, helping acceleration...
* England - London buses to trial anti-collision sensors
(Photo: The sensors will alert drivers to nearby cyclists and pedestrians)
London,EN,UK -Mayor Watch, by Martin Hoscik -August 1, 2014: -- Electronic sensors capable of alerting bus drivers to the presence of nearby pedestrians and cyclists are to be trialled on two London bus routes... Transport for London says two systems, CycleEye and Cycle Safety Shield, will each be fitted to one bus on route 25 and one on route 73 for a six week period and their effectiveness in reducing collisions measured... TfL’s Ben Plowden says if the trial is successful the organisation will work with bus operators and manufacturers to agree the best way to roll-out the technology across the network...
* London - TfL will trial bus WiFi and digital seat data displays
(Photo from TfL: London buses will offer in-journey WiFi services as part of new technology trials being led by Transport for London)
London,EN,UK -V3, by Dan Worth -6 Aug 2014: -- TfL said the WiFi service will be trialled on the route 12 bus, between Dulwich and Oxford Circus, and the route RV1 bus, which operates between Covent Garden and Tower Hill. If successful TfL is hopeful that sponsors for the WiFi services may be found, to help provide free access... TfL said the buses in the trial will have two units installed, each fitted with two sim cards, connected to two different networks. The unit will use the strongest connection it is receiving to broadcast WiFi. The sim cards have 4G connectivity so high-speed WiFi should be available... TfL already offers free WiFi on the London Underground, with services provided by Virgin Media to all UK smartphone customers free of charge... TfL also announced trials to provide digital seat information so that people boarding a double-decker bus can see how many seats are free upstairs. This will be trialled on the route 141 bus between Palmers Green and London Bridge... Finally, TfL will also trial new digital display screens on buses that will present more information about the journey. This will include details on upcoming bus stops, anticipated arrival times and transport interchanges...
