Cutbacks * New Zealand - To city bus services proposed
Southland,New Zealand -The Southland Times, by EVAN HARDING -13 February 2009: -- Some Invercargill residents who rely on buses for transport may soon be out of luck... A proposal to cut 210km off the city's daily passenger bus routes was tabled at an Invercargill City Council committee meeting this week... Senior traffic management officer Eddie Cook said the proposed changes, if implemented, meant some residents would no longer have buses travelling down their streets. As a result, passengers may be lost under the proposed routes, but others may be gained when the buses started going down their streets... Mr Cook said the aim was for the buses to travel the least distance and pick up the maximum number of passengers... Nothing concrete had been decided and discussions with the bus operator would take place, he said... More than 238,000 passengers were carried on the city's bus service in the six months to December 33,000 more than in the corresponding six-month period the previous year...
