PASSENGERS' TRANSPORT INDUSTRY NEWS * UK - Stagecoach buys Eastbourne Buses
Eastbourne ,UK -A Transport of Delight -26 November 2008: -- The sale has been imminent for some weeks after it was revealed the company was in poor financial condition. It remained solvent because its assets, primarily the Birch Road depot and workshops, which covered its liabilities. It also faced regular criticism over the past two years following unpopular timetable changes, the axing of uneconomical routes and above inflation fare rises which the company said was due to spiralling fuel costs, competition from the Cavendish-Renown operator and difficulties in keeping to timetables because of traffic congestion on some routes... A spokesperson at Eastbourne Borough Council said, "The transfer of Eastbourne Buses to a significant transport operator has been the council's intention over the past few months and the decision follows a full competitive process to ensure best value for council tax payers"...
* DfT considers Bus Pass regulation
London,UK -A Transport for Delight -16 November 2008: -- The Department of Transport is currently looking at some form of regulation to make the rules, as to where Over 60's National Free Bus Passes may be used, easier to understand by the public and staff... DfT: "We are considering adding five criteria to the existing list. It is proposed that the following types of service should be explicitly excluded from the statutory concession:
- Services on which the majority of seats can be reserved in advance of travel
- Services that do not run at least once per week for a period of at least 6 consecutive weeks
- Services that run primarily for the historical value or tourism
- Rail replacement services
- Services where the fare charged by the operator has a special amenity element.
... The new rule, if brought in, would effectively rule out the use of Bus Passes on all National Express services. The DfT themselves stated,"It is not the intention of the concession to offer free travel on coaches"...
