Taking one’s life in one’s own hands - Commuters stress that poor vehicle maintenance putting lives at risk
Islamabad,Pakistan -The Daily Times, by Sohail Chaudhry -29 Jan 2008: -- Public transport vehicles are not reliable because of poor maintenance, complained commuters on Monday. Tahir Iqbal, an official at the Motor Vehicle Examiner Office, told a campaign would be launched against the vehicles not meeting maintenance standards. "At least 35 vans were fined on Saturday because of poor maintenance,” he said. Commuters are not satisfied with the public transport and say their lives were at risk because of faults in the vans, especially those plying on routes 121, 127, 124 and 111... “I have observed that wheels of several vans did not align properly. It can cause accidents any time.” He said the reckless attitude of drivers was another problem. Gates of vans were fixed loosely, sometimes with ropes, and a passenger sitting close to the gate could fall down with a jerk... A conductor said van owners were carelessness. He said, “It is really a threat not only to commuters but also the conductors”... He said the conductors faced criticism while maintenance of vans was responsibility of the owners...
