Everybody on the bus
Norfolk,VA,USA -The Virginian-Pilot, by Kerry Dougherty -March 31, 2007: -- Almost 20 years after it was first proposed, the governor has signed a bill that finally allows private-school students to hitch rides on public-school buses... That ought to be the end of the bus battle. It isn't... This could get ugly. Frank Barham, executive director of the Virginia School Boards Association, is unhappy... The ink on Gov. Timothy M. Kaine's signature wasn't dry before Barham called on schools to ignore the newly minted law - the one that simply permits non-public-school kids on public-school buses where practical and allows fees to be assessed if needed... Barham wants to slam the bus doors shut... There. Is that so hard?... Memo to Virginia's school board members: Do the right thing and see if share the ride can work. It's all about getting kids to school safely... Open those doors and let 'em all on the bus...
