* Japan - Govt failing to maintain bus checks
Tokyo,Japan -The Yomiuri Shimbun -Feb. 26, 2007: -- The Construction and Transport Ministry has been able to conduct safety inspections of only 10-20 percent of chartered bus firms across the nation in recent years... Since the industry was deregulated in 2000, the number of chartered bus firms has increased sharply and the government's safety check system cannot cope with the increase... Azumino Kanko Bus tour company based in Matsukawamura, Nagano Prefecture, which was involved in a recent fatal accident in Osaka Prefecture, in which one person died and 26 were injured, had not received a safety inspection until the beginning of this month... The ministry added more than 30 inspectors across the country in January, but the total number of inspectors is still only 166, far fewer than required...
