* USA - NTSB Urges Cell Phone Ban for Bus Drivers
Washington,DC,USA -The Washington Post, by Bill Brubaker -Nov 21, 2006: -- The National Transportation Safety Board today urged the federal and state governments to forbid motor coach and school bus drivers from using cell phones while driving, except in emergencies... The recommendation came in an NTSB report on a non-fatal bus accident on the George Washington Memorial Parkway in Alexandria in November 2004. The tour bus of Catholic school students from Massachusetts slammed into a low, stone overpass along the parkway, crushing the roof and injuring 11 teenagers on a class trip, according to police and the NTSB... The bus driver was talking on a hands-free cell phone at the time of the accident, and he told investigators he did not see the signs on the parkway that alert motorists to the height of the overpass, the NTSB said...

* China - 8 students killed in China bus plunge
Beijing,CHI -Xinhua/AP/Houston Chronicle (Houston,TX,USA) -21 Nov 2006: -- A bus carrying primary school students plunged off a bridge in northeastern China on Tuesday, killing eight of the children and injuring 39, state media said... Police said the accident likely occurred because the driver was speeding and the bus, which was licensed to carry only 26 passengers, was overloaded, it said...

The tractor-trailer driver apparently did not realize his rig had become detached, and the trailer was sitting in the roadway when it was hit by the bus...
