In New Haven, the DEP paid for pollution-control equipment for the fleet at a cost of about $1,200 a bus... the DEP is particularly concerned about so-called fine-particulate matter: soot with a diameter of 2.5 microns emitted from diesel engines, which can cause health problems or worsen existing ones.
