Old Buses... * USA - ... Don't Die ... DTA ones they go to Peoria

Who wants Duluth's old buses? Peoria, Illinois, sure does

Duluth,ILL,USA -The Peoria Journal Star/The Duluth News Tribune -22 March 2010: -- District Board this month approved spending $105,000 for 10 used Duluth buses, reported... Besides the purchase price, the $105,000 also covers the cost to transport the 35-foot buses from Duluth to Peoria, give them a paint job and to outfit them for use there. That comes out to just under $5,000 for each of the 13-year-old Duluth Transit Authority buses that have an average of 300,000 miles logged on them... So what does Peoria want with our old buses? Turns out, their transit system has an aging fleet. So they look for used buses to replace their defunct buses until they get the money to buy brand new ones. They also buy some old buses for parts... It's a temporary fix until they get 21 new buses, probably next year... Peoria has looked to Duluth before for used buses. It bought six old DTA buses in 2007...(Photo from farm4.static.flickr: Old bus)

Nostalgic * UK - Cor, I am feeling rather GM Buses

Cor, I am feeling rather nostalgic now

Manchester,UK -DarkAeon’s Demented Declamations -May 16, 2009: --
... Someone on twitter posted a picture of an old bus, which in turn made me remember the old orange livery of the GM buses that used to be all over Manchester when, following deregulation in 1986, Greater Manchester Transport was dissolved and GM Buses rose from the ashes...See some cracking shots of Manchester back in the day the old Arndale bus station! ... The 22 is a special favourite of mine as we used to be able to get from my childhood home directly to my Nana and Grandad’s house on it!... The buses used to be really old, very musty, and have a faux-wood panel interior with brown/yellow/mustard/orange seat covers. Straight out of the 80s!... With such a ‘yuk’ factor in today’s world, you may be surprised to know that they still operate some of these GM buses – they were sold to Magic / Stagecoach and are still heavily used on the student routes across the city... Oh, and of course you mustn’t forget… you must ALWAYS get your feet off the ground if a Ring-and-Ride comes past…!

The end of an era * UK - Old Leyland buses reach last stop

Edinburgh,Scotland,UK -The Scotsman, by CHRIS MARSHALL -14 March 2009: -- They have been a familiar site on the streets of the Capital for the past 90 years... But today marks the end of an era for Edinburgh's association with Leyland buses, which are being retired after ferrying passengers around the city since 1919... The last of the Leylands, which are F-registered and were bought back in 1989, are now being sold off...
The move came as the firm made space for 40 new buses it had bought to add to its Edinburgh fleet... The company replaces ageing buses annually, but this was the first time it had offered surplus vehicles for sale online, meaning anyone could own their own bus if they liked...

* Council makes post bus cost claim

Scotland,UK -BBC News -14 March 2009: -- An increase in subsidies requested by Royal Mail to keep remote post buses on the road could have been met, Highland Council has revealed... Royal Mail plans to stop operating five services - two in the far north and three in the west Highlands - in April... A council officer said it was likely the council would have agreed to pay the extra subsidy asked for the two northern services... Royal Mail has previously said it was first and foremost a postal operator, not a transport company, and its first priority was the collection and delivery of mail... Old Trolley Bus Fleet * Canada - Last stop Argentina, for Vancouver's ones

Vancouver,BC,Canada -The Vancouver Sun, by Kelly Sinoski -September 11, 2008: -- They're too old and not accessible enough to serve the people of Metro Vancouver, but 80 retired trolley buses are being welcomed by a city in Argentina... TransLink has struck a deal with Mendoza to sell the 25-year-old New Flyer Industries buses for $2,300 each plus shipping costs... TransLink representative Drew Snider said if TransLink had turned the buses to the wreckers for scrap, it would have received just $1,600 per bus, minus $600 each for decommissioning... The buses are the only ones left of a fleet of 244 that joined the bus system in the early 1980s. The others were retired from service some time ago, with most of them turned into scrap... It will stay in Vancouver as part of the Transit Museum Society collection, but 80 of its 'stable-mates' are off to new lives in Argentina.Photograph by : Handout - Translink)
